What Is Special Needs Dentistry?

Special needs dentistry is a patient-centered approach designed for children who require extra support during dental visits — whether due to sensory sensitivities, developmental differences, physical challenges, or medical conditions. Every child deserves quality dental care, and we’re here to make sure that’s possible for yours.

Who We Care For

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Children with autism often experience heightened sensory sensitivity that can make dental visits overwhelming. We take a slow, predictable approach — introducing tools gradually, explaining every step, and adjusting our environment to reduce sensory triggers as much as possible.

ADHD & Attention Difficulties

Kids with ADHD may struggle to sit still or stay focused during appointments. Our team is experienced in keeping visits engaging, efficient, and calm — working with your child’s energy rather than against it.

Cerebral Palsy & Physical Disabilities

We accommodate children with mobility challenges and physical disabilities, adapting our approach and equipment setup to ensure every visit is as comfortable and accessible as possible.

Anxiety & Sensory Processing Disorders

For children who are easily overwhelmed by sounds, lights, or touch, we offer a calm environment and flexible pacing. We never rush, and we always follow your child’s lead.

Other Medical Conditions

We work closely with parents and specialists to understand your child’s unique medical history and tailor our care accordingly. No two children are the same — and neither are our treatment plans.

A Practice Built Around Your Child

At HALO, we believe that a child’s diagnosis should never be a barrier to receiving great dental care. Before your first visit, we encourage you to share as much as you’d like about your child — their triggers, their communication style, what helps them feel safe. The more we know, the better we can prepare.

We also offer pre-visit tours for families who want their child to get familiar with the space before any treatment takes place.

Patience Is Part of Our Process

There’s no rushing here. Our team is trained to move at your child’s pace — whether that means spending extra time on the first visit just getting comfortable in the chair, or breaking treatment into multiple shorter appointments. What matters most is that your child leaves feeling okay about coming back.

Parents are always welcome chairside, and we’ll keep you involved and informed at every step.

FAQ

How do I prepare my child for their first visit?

Reach out before your appointment and tell us about your child. We’ll work with you to prepare the team, adjust the environment if needed, and create a plan that gives your child the best possible first experience.

Do you offer sedation for children with special needs?

Yes. For children who need additional support to receive care safely and comfortably, we offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation options. Dr. Estrada will review your child’s full medical history and recommend the most appropriate approach.

What if my child can’t tolerate a full appointment?

That’s completely okay. We can break treatment into shorter visits, adjust our approach between appointments, and work gradually toward full care. Our goal is progress — not perfection on day one.

Do you have experience with nonverbal children?

Yes. Our team is experienced in working with children who communicate differently, and we’re committed to finding ways to connect with every child in a way that works for them.
